Quick answer: Philadelphia (39.95° N, 75.17° W) is in the Eastern Time Zone. Most local timetables use the ISNA 15° method. In winter Fajr is around 6:00 AM and Isha around 6:20 PM; in midsummer Fajr can be as early as about 4:00 AM and Isha after 10:00 PM. Always check the live tool or your local masjid for the exact time today.
How to Check Philadelphia Prayer Times Today
Printed timetables go out of date quickly, so the most reliable way to get Philadelphia prayer times today is a calculator that works from today’s date and the city’s coordinates:
- Open the Prayer Times Today Worldwide tool.
- Enter Philadelphia as the city and USA as the country, or press Use My Location.
- Select Islamic Society of North America if your masjid follows ISNA, or the method your community uses.
- Note that the tool calculates Asr by the Hanafi method; if you follow the Shafi’i, Maliki or Hanbali view, your Asr begins earlier (see the table below).
Masjids also publish an iqamah (congregation) time, which is usually 10 to 20 minutes after the start time shown by a calculator. If you pray in congregation, follow your masjid’s own schedule.

The Five Daily Prayers and Their Time Windows
Allah says in the Quran that prayer has been prescribed for the believers at fixed times (Surah An-Nisa 4:103). Each prayer is linked to a position of the sun:
- Fajr starts at true dawn and ends at sunrise. See our Fajr prayer guide.
- Dhuhr starts just after the sun passes its highest point (zawal). Read the Zuhr prayer method.
- Asr starts when an object’s shadow reaches a set length (see methods below). Learn the Asr rakats and method.
- Maghrib starts right after sunset and has a short window. See the Maghrib prayer guide.
- Isha starts when the evening twilight has gone. Read the Isha prayer method with Witr.
Prayer Time Calculation Methods Used in Philadelphia
Two calculators can give different Fajr and Isha times for the same city because they use different twilight angles (how far the sun is below the horizon):
- ISNA (Islamic Society of North America): 15° for both Fajr and Isha. This is the most common default in the USA and gives a later Fajr and earlier Isha.
- Muslim World League (MWL): 18° Fajr and 17° Isha, giving an earlier Fajr and later Isha.
- University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi: 18° for both, often preferred by South Asian communities.
Asr has two juristic views. In the standard (Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali) view, Asr begins when an object’s shadow equals its own length plus its noon shadow. In the Hanafi view it begins when the shadow is twice the object’s length, which in Philadelphia is roughly 40 minutes to over an hour later depending on the season. Both views are legitimate; follow the one your community or teacher follows.
Jummah Prayer in Philadelphia
On Friday, Jummah prayer replaces Dhuhr. Because Dhuhr in Philadelphia starts around 12:00 PM in winter and around 1:00 PM in summer (Daylight Saving Time), most masjids hold the khutbah after Dhuhr begins, and many larger centers run two or more shifts for students and workers. Times differ by masjid and season, so check your local masjid’s website or notice board for the current Jummah schedule.
Ramadan: Sehri and Iftar Times in Philadelphia
During Ramadan the fasting day runs from Fajr to Maghrib:
- Sehri (Suhoor) ends when Fajr begins. Many people stop eating a few minutes earlier as a precaution.
- Iftar is at Maghrib, right after sunset.
- Taraweeh is prayed after Isha; see our Taraweeh guide.
Because the Fajr angle changes the Sehri time by up to 20 minutes, use the same method as your masjid when planning Sehri.
