Why Praying on Time Matters | وقت پر نماز کیوں اہم ہے؟

Allah says that prayer is prescribed for the believers at fixed times (Quran 4:103). When Abdullah ibn Mas’ud asked the Prophet ﷺ which deed is most beloved to Allah, he replied: prayer offered at its proper time (Sahih al-Bukhari 527). Between office hours, school and long commutes, knowing the exact window of each prayer is what makes this possible.

The Five Daily Prayers | پانچ وقت کی نماز

Each obligatory prayer starts at a specific solar event. Your local Asr time also depends on whether your community follows the Hanafi or the standard view.

Prayer (Salah)Arabic / UrduStarts atUS calculation note
Fajrالفجر / فجرTrue dawn (subh sadiq)Twilight angle 15° (ISNA) to 18° (MWL, Karachi)
Dhuhrالظهر / ظہرJust after zawal (solar noon)About 1 hour later on the clock during Daylight Saving Time
Asrالعصر / عصرShadow length ruleStandard (Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanbali) or Hanafi (later)
Maghribالمغرب / مغربSunsetShort window; pray soon after sunset
Ishaالعشاء / عشاءEnd of evening twilight15° (ISNA), 17° (MWL) or 18° (Karachi)

Fajr | فجر

Fajr begins at true dawn and ends at sunrise. In northern states in summer it can start before 4:00 AM. Step-by-step method: Fajr prayer guide.

Dhuhr | ظہر

Dhuhr begins shortly after the sun passes its highest point. Office workers can often pray it in a lunch break or a quiet room. Read the Zuhr prayer method. On Fridays it is replaced by Jummah prayer.

Asr | عصر

In the standard view Asr begins when an object’s shadow equals its length plus its noon shadow; in the Hanafi view, when the shadow is twice its length. The Hanafi time is usually 40 to 70 minutes later. See Asr rakats and method.

Maghrib | مغرب

Maghrib starts as soon as the sun has fully set. Its window is the shortest of the day, so it is best not to delay it.

Isha | عشاء

Isha starts after the evening twilight disappears. Learn the full method, including Witr, in Namaz e Isha tariqa and our Witr prayer guide.

How Prayer Times Are Calculated in America | نماز کے اوقات کیسے نکالے جاتے ہیں؟

Prayer times are worked out from the sun’s angle relative to your local horizon. The main methods you will see in US apps are:

  • ISNA (Islamic Society of North America): 15° for Fajr and Isha. The most common default in the USA and Canada.
  • Muslim World League (MWL): 18° Fajr, 17° Isha.
  • University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi: 18° for both; popular with South Asian communities.
  • Diyanet / Turkey method: used by many Turkish communities, including those connected to the Diyanet Center of America; it uses 18° Fajr and 17° Isha with small safety adjustments.

The difference between 15° and 18° can move Fajr by 15 to 25 minutes, which matters for Sehri in Ramadan. Ask your masjid which method it uses and set your app the same way.

Daylight Saving Time: from March to November clocks move forward one hour, so every prayer appears one hour later on the clock. Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe Daylight Saving Time, so their prayer clocks do not jump.

High latitudes (for example Alaska): in summer the sky may never get fully dark, so standard angles do not work. Calculators then use a high-latitude rule such as middle of the night, one-seventh of the night or angle-based estimates. Follow your local masjid’s timetable in such places.

FAQ | اہم سوالات

Do prayer times differ across the USA?

Yes. Each city has its own times because of its latitude, longitude and time zone. Even cities in the same time zone can differ by 30 minutes or more.

Which calculation method is used in the USA?

ISNA (15°) is the most common, but many masjids use Muslim World League, Karachi or the Turkish (Diyanet) method. Use the same method as your local masjid.

How can I check namaz vakitleri for my city?

Enter your city and USA in our live prayer times tool, or tap Use My Location. You can also check your local masjid’s published timetable.

Why do two apps show different Fajr times?

They are probably set to different twilight angles (15° vs 18°) or different Asr methods. Match the settings to your masjid.

Is it okay to delay prayer because of work?

Each prayer should be offered within its time. Plan short breaks in advance; if a prayer is missed for a valid reason, make it up as soon as possible.
