About Surah Baqarah

Surah Al-Baqarah (“The Cow”) takes its name from the story of the cow that Bani Israel were commanded to slaughter (ayat 67–73). It was revealed in Madinah and lays down the foundations of Islamic belief, worship and society: fasting, Hajj, qiblah, marriage and divorce, inheritance, financial contracts, the prohibition of riba and much more.

Arabic Text (Opening Verses)

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ الم ۝ ذَٰلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لَا رَيْبَ ۛ فِيهِ ۛ هُدًى لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

English translation

Alif, Lam, Meem. This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah. (Quran 2:1–2)

الف، لام، میم۔ یہ وہ کتاب ہے جس میں کوئی شک نہیں، ہدایت ہے پرہیزگاروں کے لیے۔

Virtues of Surah Baqarah from Authentic Hadith

The virtues below are taken only from Sahih Muslim and Sahih al-Bukhari:

1. Shaytan flees from the house where it is recited

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not make your houses graveyards. Satan runs away from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.” (Sahih Muslim 780)

2. Blessing (barakah) and protection from magicians

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Recite Surah Al-Baqarah, for taking it is a blessing, leaving it is a cause of regret, and the magicians cannot confront it.” He also said that Al-Baqarah and Aal-Imran will come on the Day of Judgement like two clouds or shades, pleading for those who recited them. (Sahih Muslim 804)

3. It contains the greatest verse of the Quran

Ayatul Kursi (2:255) was confirmed by the Prophet ﷺ as the greatest verse in the Book of Allah (Sahih Muslim 810).

صحیح مسلم کی حدیث کے مطابق جس گھر میں سورۃ البقرہ کی تلاوت کی جاتی ہے وہاں سے شیطان بھاگ جاتا ہے۔ اس کو پڑھنا برکت ہے، چھوڑنا حسرت ہے اور جادوگر اس کا مقابلہ نہیں کر سکتے۔

These narrations are the basis for reciting Surah Baqarah at home for protection from evil and black magic. Fixed rituals such as “recite it for 40 days to remove any magic” are not from the Sunnah – regular, sincere recitation is what the hadith describes.

Last Two Verses of Surah Baqarah (Ayat 285–286)

The final two ayat, starting with “Amanar-Rasulu…”, affirm belief in Allah, His angels, books and messengers, and end with the beautiful dua “Rabbana la tu’akhidhna in nasina aw akhta’na…” asking Allah for pardon, forgiveness and help.

When to Recite Surah Baqarah | سورۃ البقرہ کب پڑھیں؟

• At home regularly: the hadith of Sahih Muslim 780 encourages reciting it in your house; many families divide it over a few days.
• Every night: the last two ayat (285–286) and Ayatul Kursi (255) before sleeping.
• In a new home: reciting it when moving in is a good way to fill the house with the Quran.
• During hard times: for comfort, guidance and protection.
