📖 110 Verses 🕌 Makki Surah ✦ Friday Surah ⏱ 18 min read

What is Surah Kahf?

Surah Kahf — meaning “The Cave” — is the 18th chapter of the Holy Quran. It contains 110 verses across 12 sections (ruku) and was revealed in Makkah, making it a Makki Surah. It is found in the 15th and 16th Para (Juz) of the Quran.

Surah Kahf is one of the most beloved and widely recited chapters in the Quran. It holds a special place in Islamic practice because the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ specifically recommended reading it every Friday — and described profound spiritual rewards for doing so. It contains four remarkable stories, each carrying deep wisdom for the believer’s life.

The Four Great Stories of Surah Kahf

Surah Kahf is built around four powerful narratives, each teaching a timeless lesson:

1. The People of the Cave (Ashaab-ul-Kahf) — Verses 9–26: A group of young believers fled persecution and took refuge in a cave. Allah caused them to sleep for 309 years and then awakened them — a miraculous sign of His power over time and life. This story is a lesson against the trial of religious persecution.

2. The Owner of Two Gardens — Verses 32–44: A wealthy man became arrogant about his gardens and forgot that his blessings came from Allah. His gardens were destroyed. This is a warning against the trial of wealth.

3. Prophet Musa and Khidr — Verses 60–82: Prophet Musa ﷺ travels with a mysterious righteous servant (Khidr) and witnesses actions he cannot understand — until Khidr explains the divine wisdom behind each one. This story teaches humility before Allah’s knowledge and is a lesson against the trial of knowledge and ego.

4. Dhul-Qarnayn — Verses 83–98: A powerful, just ruler travels across the earth, helping oppressed peoples and building the famous wall against Gog and Magog (Ya’juj and Ma’juj). This is a lesson against the trial of power.

While transliteration is a valuable stepping stone, Islamic scholars universally encourage learners to progress toward reading the Quran directly in Arabic. The Quran in its original language carries a beauty and precision that no transliteration can fully capture.

Surah Kahf Meaning — What Does It Teach Us?

The word “Kahf” (كهف) means “The Cave” in Arabic — referring to the cave in which the young believers (Ashaab-ul-Kahf) took shelter from their oppressors. But the deeper meaning of Surah Kahf goes far beyond that cave.

The Surah addresses one of the most urgent questions of every era: how does a believer maintain faith and integrity in a world full of trials? The four stories of Surah Kahf each represent one type of worldly trial — the trial of faith, wealth, knowledge, and power — and each story provides a Quranic answer.

Key Themes and Their Meanings

Verse 28 contains one of the most famous instructions in the Quran: keep company with those who remember Allah, regardless of their social status, and do not let your eyes look away from them toward those of worldly prestige. This verse speaks directly to the trial of class and social pressure.

Verse 45 gives a beautiful parable: the life of this world is like rain that falls on earth, causing lush vegetation to grow — then the vegetation dries up and is scattered by the wind. This is the meaning of worldly life — temporary, however brilliant it appears.

Verse 110 — the final verse — contains one of the most powerful closing statements in the Quran: “Say: I am only a human being like you, to whom it has been revealed that your god is but One God. So whoever hopes to meet his Lord — let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.” This is the essence of Islam in a single verse.

110
Qul innamā ana basharum-mithlukum yūḥā ilayya annamā ilāhukum ilāhun wāḥid — faman kāna yarjū liqā’a Rabbihī falya’mal ‘amalan ṣāliḥañw-wa lā yushrik bi’ibādati Rabbihī aḥadā
“Say: I am only a human being like you. It has been revealed to me that your God is One God. So whoever hopes to meet his Lord — let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.” (18:110)

Surah Kahf Last 10 Ayat — Arabic, Transliteration & Meaning

The last 10 ayat of Surah Kahf (verses 101–110) hold extraordinary importance in Islamic tradition. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that memorizing and reciting the last 10 verses of Surah Kahf is a protection against the Dajjal (Antichrist) — the greatest trial that will ever face humanity before the Day of Judgement.

“Whoever memorizes ten verses from the beginning of Surah Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal.” In another narration: “from the last ten verses of Surah Kahf.”
— Sahih Muslim | This is an authentic, well-established hadith acted upon by scholars universally

Below are the last 10 ayat (verses 101–110) with Arabic text, transliteration, and English meaning:

101
Alladhīna kānat a’yunuhum fī ghiṭā’in ‘an dhikrī wa kānū lā yastaṭī’ūna sam’ā
Those whose eyes were veiled from My reminder and who were unable to hear.
102
Afaḥasibal-ladhīna kafarū ay-yattakhidhū ‘ibādī min dūnī awliyā’ — innā a’tadnā Jahannama lil-kāfirīna nuzulā
Do the disbelievers think that they can take My servants as protectors instead of Me? Indeed, We have prepared Hell as accommodation for the disbelievers.
103–104
Qul hal nunabbi’ukum bil-akhsarīna a’māla — alladhīna ḍalla sa’yuhum fil-ḥayātid-dunyā wa hum yaḥsabūna annahum yuḥsinūna ṣun’ā
Say: Shall We inform you of the greatest losers in deeds? They are those whose efforts are wasted in worldly life, while they think they are doing good.
107–108
Innal-ladhīna āmanū wa ‘amilus-ṣāliḥāti kānat lahum Jannātul-Firdawsi nuzulā — khālidīna fīhā lā yabghūna ‘anhā ḥiwala
Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds — they will have the Gardens of Paradise as accommodation, to dwell therein forever, never wishing for any change.
109
Qul law kānal-baḥru midādal-likalimāti Rabbī lanafidal-baḥru qabla an tanfada kalimātu Rabbī wa law ji’nā bimithlihī madadā
Say: If the ocean were ink for the words of my Lord, the ocean would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement.
110
Qul innamā ana basharum-mithlukum yūḥā ilayya annamā ilāhukum ilāhun wāḥid — faman kāna yarjū liqā’a Rabbihī falya’mal ‘amalan ṣāliḥañw-wa lā yushrik bi’ibādati Rabbihī aḥadā
Say: I am only a human being like you. It has been revealed to me that your God is One God. So whoever hopes to meet his Lord — let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.
📿 Tip for Memorization: Begin with verse 110 (the shortest), then work backward. Reciting these 10 ayat after Fajr daily is the most effective method scholars recommend. Use Quran.com/18 with the repeat feature to loop individual verses.

Why Read Surah Kahf on Friday?

🌙

Surah Kahf & Jumu’ah — An Inseparable Sunnah

Friday is the most honoured day of the Islamic week. The Prophet ﷺ specifically singled out Surah Kahf for Friday recitation — a practice that has been preserved across 1,400 years of Islamic tradition, from Arabia to Bangladesh, from Turkey to Indonesia.

The connection between Surah Kahf and Friday is established in multiple authentic narrations. Scholars explain that the “light” mentioned in the hadith refers to the spiritual illumination that guides a believer through the week — keeping them grounded in faith, humble in wealth, measured in knowledge, and just in power.

When Exactly Should You Read It on Friday?

Scholars say Surah Kahf can be read at any time on Friday. The preferred opinion is that Friday begins at Maghrib on Thursday evening (as the Islamic day starts at sunset), so reciting it from Thursday night onward counts. The latest time is before Maghrib on Friday itself.

What If You Cannot Read the Whole Surah?

If time or ability does not allow reading all 110 verses, scholars advise at minimum reciting the first 10 verses or the last 10 verses — as both carry the specific protection from Dajjal mentioned in Sahih Muslim. Even a few verses with sincerity and reflection are better than leaving the Surah entirely.

💡 Practical Tip: Set a reminder on your phone every Thursday night — “Read Surah Kahf.” This small habit, maintained consistently, connects you to a Prophetic practice observed by millions of believers every single week.
