What is Surah Kahf?

Surah Kahf (Surah Al-Kahf, “The Cave”) is the 18th surah of the Quran, with 110 verses revealed in Makkah, in Juz 15 and 16. Muslims read it every Friday because of a hadith graded hasan by al-Albani: whoever recites it on Friday will have light until the next Friday. Sahih Muslim also teaches that memorising ten verses from its beginning (in another narration, from its end) protects from the Dajjal.

The Four Great Stories of Surah Kahf

Surah Kahf is built around four powerful narratives, each teaching a timeless lesson:

1. The People of the Cave (Ashaab-ul-Kahf) — Verses 9–26: A group of young believers fled persecution and took refuge in a cave. Allah caused them to sleep for 309 years and then awakened them — a miraculous sign of His power over time and life. This story is a lesson against the trial of religious persecution.

2. The Owner of Two Gardens — Verses 32–44: A wealthy man became arrogant about his gardens and forgot that his blessings came from Allah. His gardens were destroyed. This is a warning against the trial of wealth.

3. Prophet Musa and Khidr — Verses 60–82: Prophet Musa ﷺ travels with a mysterious righteous servant (Khidr) and witnesses actions he cannot understand — until Khidr explains the divine wisdom behind each one. This story teaches humility before Allah’s knowledge and is a lesson against the trial of knowledge and ego.

4. Dhul-Qarnayn — Verses 83–98: A powerful, just ruler travels across the earth, helping oppressed peoples and building the famous wall against Gog and Magog (Ya’juj and Ma’juj). This is a lesson against the trial of power.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنزَلَ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عِوَجًا

Alḥamdu lillāhil-ladhī anzala ‘alā ‘abdihil-kitāba wa lam yaj’al lahū ‘iwajā

All praise is for Allah Who has revealed the Book to His servant and has not made it crooked.

قَيِّمًا لِّيُنذِرَ بَأْسًا شَدِيدًا مِّن لَّدُنْهُ وَيُبَشِّرَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ أَجْرًا حَسَنًا

Qayyimal-li-yundhira ba’san shadīdam-mil-ladunhu wa yubashshiral-mu’minīnal-ladhīna ya’malūnaṣ-ṣāliḥāti anna lahum ajran ḥasanā

[He has made it] straight, to warn of severe punishment from Him and to give good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a good reward.

مَّٰكِثِينَ فِيهِ أَبَدًا

Mākhithīna fīhi abadā

In which they will remain forever.

إِذْ أَوَى ٱلْفِتْيَةُ إِلَى ٱلْكَهْفِ فَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا

Idh awal-fityatu ilal-kahfi faqālū Rabbanā ātinā mil-ladunka raḥmatañw-wa hayyi’ lanā min amrinā rashadā

When the youths retreated to the cave and said: “Our Lord! Grant us mercy from Yourself and guide us rightly in our affairs.”

Surah Kahf Transliteration — Roman English

Surah Kahf Meaning — What Does It Teach Us?

The word “Kahf” (كهف) means “The Cave” in Arabic — referring to the cave in which the young believers (Ashaab-ul-Kahf) took shelter from their oppressors. But the deeper meaning of Surah Kahf goes far beyond that cave.

The Surah addresses one of the most urgent questions of every era: how does a believer maintain faith and integrity in a world full of trials? The four stories of Surah Kahf each represent one type of worldly trial — the trial of faith, wealth, knowledge, and power — and each story provides a Quranic answer.

Key Themes and Their Meanings

Verse 28 contains one of the most famous instructions in the Quran: keep company with those who remember Allah, regardless of their social status, and do not let your eyes look away from them toward those of worldly prestige. This verse speaks directly to the trial of class and social pressure.

Verse 45 gives a beautiful parable: the life of this world is like rain that falls on earth, causing lush vegetation to grow — then the vegetation dries up and is scattered by the wind. This is the meaning of worldly life — temporary, however brilliant it appears.

Verse 110 — the final verse — contains one of the most powerful closing statements in the Quran: “Say: I am only a human being like you, to whom it has been revealed that your god is but One God. So whoever hopes to meet his Lord — let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.” This is the essence of Islam in a single verse.

قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ أَنَّمَآ إِلَٰهُكُمْ إِلَٰهٌ وَٰحِدٌ ۖ فَمَن كَانَ يَرْجُوا۟ لِقَآءَ رَبِّهِۦ فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلًا صَٰلِحًا وَلَا يُشْرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهِۦٓ أَحَدًۢا

Qul innamā ana basharum-mithlukum yūḥā ilayya annamā ilāhukum ilāhun wāḥid — faman kāna yarjū liqā’a Rabbihī falya’mal ‘amalan ṣāliḥañw-wa lā yushrik bi’ibādati Rabbihī aḥadā

“Say: I am only a human being like you. It has been revealed to me that your God is One God. So whoever hopes to meet his Lord — let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.” (18:110)

Surah Kahf Last 10 Ayat — Arabic, Transliteration & Meaning

The last 10 ayat of Surah Kahf (verses 101–110) are memorised by many Muslims because of an authentic hadith in Sahih Muslim about protection from the Dajjal (the False Messiah), the greatest trial before the Day of Judgement. The main wording mentions the first ten verses, and another chain of the same hadith says “from the end of al-Kahf”, so scholars encourage learning both.

“If anyone learns by heart the first ten verses of Surah al-Kahf, he will be protected from the Dajjal.” In the narration of Shu’bah the wording is: “from the end of al-Kahf.”

ٱلَّذِينَ كَانَتْ أَعْيُنُهُمْ فِى غِطَآءٍ عَن ذِكْرِى وَكَانُوا۟ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ سَمْعًا

Alladhīna kānat a’yunuhum fī ghiṭā’in ‘an dhikrī wa kānū lā yastaṭī’ūna sam’ā

Those whose eyes were veiled from My reminder and who were unable to hear.

102

أَفَحَسِبَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَن يَتَّخِذُوا۟ عِبَادِى مِن دُونِىٓ أَوْلِيَآءَ ۚ إِنَّآ أَعْتَدْنَا جَهَنَّمَ لِلْكَٰفِرِينَ نُزُلًا

Afaḥasibal-ladhīna kafarū ay-yattakhidhū ‘ibādī min dūnī awliyā’ — innā a’tadnā Jahannama lil-kāfirīna nuzulā

Do the disbelievers think that they can take My servants as protectors instead of Me? Indeed, We have prepared Hell as accommodation for the disbelievers.

103–104

قُلْ هَلْ نُنَبِّئُكُم بِٱلْأَخْسَرِينَ أَعْمَٰلًا ۝ ٱلَّذِينَ ضَلَّ سَعْيُهُمْ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ يَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ يُحْسِنُونَ صُنْعًا

Qul hal nunabbi’ukum bil-akhsarīna a’māla — alladhīna ḍalla sa’yuhum fil-ḥayātid-dunyā wa hum yaḥsabūna annahum yuḥsinūna ṣun’ā

Say: Shall We inform you of the greatest losers in deeds? They are those whose efforts are wasted in worldly life, while they think they are doing good.

105–106

Ulā’ikal-ladhīna kafarū bi-āyāti Rabbihim wa liqā’ihī fa-ḥabiṭat a’māluhum falā nuqīmu lahum yawmal-qiyāmati waznā — Dhālika jazā’uhum Jahannamu bimā kafarū wattakhadhū āyātī wa rusulī huzuwā

Those are the ones who disbelieved in the signs of their Lord and in meeting Him, so their deeds have become worthless, and We will not give them any weight on the Day of Resurrection. That is their recompense, Hell, because they disbelieved and took My signs and My messengers in ridicule.

107–108

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ جَنَّٰتُ ٱلْفِرْدَوْسِ نُزُلًا ۝ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا لَا يَبْغُونَ عَنْهَا حِوَلًا

Innal-ladhīna āmanū wa ‘amilus-ṣāliḥāti kānat lahum Jannātul-Firdawsi nuzulā — khālidīna fīhā lā yabghūna ‘anhā ḥiwala

Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds — they will have the Gardens of Paradise as accommodation, to dwell therein forever, never wishing for any change.

109

قُل لَّوْ كَانَ ٱلْبَحْرُ مِدَادًا لِّكَلِمَٰتِ رَبِّى لَنَفِدَ ٱلْبَحْرُ قَبْلَ أَن تَنفَدَ كَلِمَٰتُ رَبِّى وَلَوْ جِئْنَا بِمِثْلِهِۦ مَدَدًا

Qul law kānal-baḥru midādal-likalimāti Rabbī lanafidal-baḥru qabla an tanfada kalimātu Rabbī wa law ji’nā bimithlihī madadā

Say: If the ocean were ink for the words of my Lord, the ocean would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement.

Say: I am only a human being like you. It has been revealed to me that your God is One God. So whoever hopes to meet his Lord — let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.

Opening Verses — Bangla Translation

আয়াত ১: সমস্ত প্রশংসা আল্লাহর জন্য, যিনি তাঁর বান্দার উপর কিতাব অবতীর্ণ করেছেন এবং তাতে কোনো বক্রতা রাখেননি।

Verse 1 — All praise is for Allah who revealed the Book upon His servant and put no crookedness in it.

আয়াত ২: সুপ্রতিষ্ঠিত — যাতে তিনি তাঁর পক্ষ থেকে কঠোর শাস্তির ব্যাপারে সতর্ক করেন এবং সৎকর্মশীল মুমিনদের সুসংবাদ দেন যে তাদের জন্য রয়েছে উত্তম প্রতিদান।

Verse 2 — Straight, to warn of severe punishment from Him and give glad tidings to the believers doing good deeds.

আয়াত ১০: যখন যুবকেরা গুহায় আশ্রয় নিল এবং বলল: “হে আমাদের পালনকর্তা! আমাদেরকে তোমার কাছ থেকে রহমত দাও এবং আমাদের জন্য আমাদের কাজ সঠিক করে দাও।”

Verse 10 — When the youths took refuge in the cave, saying: Our Lord, grant us mercy and guide our affairs rightly.

আয়াত ১০৯: বলুন: যদি সমুদ্র আমার পালনকর্তার কথাগুলো লেখার জন্য কালি হয়ে যায়, তাহলে আমার পালনকর্তার কথা শেষ হওয়ার আগেই সমুদ্র শেষ হয়ে যাবে — যদিও আমরা তার সমপরিমাণ আরো কালি নিয়ে আসি।

Verse 109 — If the ocean were ink for my Lord’s words, it would run out before His words were exhausted.

Why Read Surah Kahf on Friday?

Surah Kahf & Jumu’ah

Friday is the most honoured day of the Islamic week, and reciting Surah Kahf on it is a practice Muslims have kept for centuries, based on the hadith of Abu Sa’id al-Khudri graded hasan by al-Albani.

The Friday virtue rests mainly on the narration of Abu Sa’id al-Khudri quoted above. Some hadith scholars discussed whether parts of it are the Prophet’s ﷺ words or a statement of the Companion, but many, including al-Albani, accepted it as authentic, and reading Surah Kahf on Friday is widely recommended. Make it part of a complete Friday routine: Jummah prayer, its rakats and adab, and sending abundant Darood Ibrahim on the Prophet ﷺ.

When Exactly Should You Read It on Friday?

Since the Islamic day begins at sunset, many scholars say the time starts at Maghrib on Thursday evening and lasts until sunset on Friday. Reading it any time within this period counts. Check the exact Maghrib time for your city on our prayer times page.

What If You Cannot Read the Whole Surah?

The Friday light is mentioned for reciting Surah al-Kahf, so try to complete it, even in two or three sittings during the day. If you cannot, read what you are able to, and keep memorising the first and last ten verses for the protection mentioned in Sahih Muslim. A few verses with sincerity and reflection are better than leaving the surah entirely.
